JACOB BOLL: NOWHERE ELSE TO BE

In 2018, I was one of the event photographers at David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption in Los Angeles. I noticed a small window between the greenroom and the stage, a minute or two before each artist went on. It was just enough time to pull someone aside for a portrait, so I started asking the musicians and the speakers to sit for just a minute.

Then a friend saw David walking by and called out, “It’s time for your portrait, Mr. Lynch.” He sat down as if he had nowhere else to be and gave me his full attention. That was it.

I delivered the images to the festival, and when the next one came around, they asked me to set up a portrait station for the artists. After that I was asked to photograph David at book signings and other events, and eventually to shadow him and document him at the festivals. He came to know me as the one sticking to the walls of his greenrooms and trailing behind him down hallways, always welcoming me in and introducing me to whoever walked through the door next.

At one event, someone had built a replica of the Red Room. David walked in, sat down in the green velvet chair, and said, “I’m here for you. What do you want me to do?”

He was always that giving with his time, with his friends, his fans, and me, as if he had nowhere else to be.

Jacob Boll makes quiet, deliberate portraits of musicians, actors and artists. Lit with soft, directional light that falls away into shadow, his images hold a hushed, almost suspended mood, pared down to a face, a pair of hands, and the way a person holds still. Born in Chicago and based in Los Angeles, he has photographed Grace Jones, Katy Perry, Danny Elfman and David Lynch, amongst other inspiring and influential artists. What he’s after is the moment someone stops performing and simply gives the camera their attention.
