Booboo Stewart’s exhibition showcases his new painted body of work. While known for his experimental ballpoint drawings and sculptural work, Stewart expands his practice into oil paintings on view for the first time.
Booboo Stewart is a Los Angeles-born multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between painting, drawing, sculpture, music, and film. Before establishing himself as a visual artist he spent much of his life in front of the camera becoming widely known for performances as Seth Clearwater in The Twilight Saga, Warpath in X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Jay in Disney’s Descendants films. Stewart has described growing up on film sets with paper and pencils constantly at hand, drawing during the long stretches of waiting between takes. As an adult, that private habit gradually developed.
Part of the attraction was the autonomy it offered: unlike filmmaking, which depends upon an entire production, painting and drawing allowed him to take an idea directly from his mind to the finished object. He has described art as a means of confronting thoughts and emotions that are difficult to articulate verbally.
